Almost everyone knows someone whose life has been affected by breast cancer. Each year more than 9,000 Michigan residents are diagnosed with breast cancer. The physical and emotional toll of breast cancer is well known. However, the financial impact of the diagnosis is not. Many individuals who are diagnosed with breast cancer have extra financial burdens placed on them during treatment and recovery. Common issues are mortgage/rent, utilities, car payments, insurance, transportation, and expenses related to childcare. Breast cancer treatment is one of the most expensive of all cancers; it carries the highest out-of-pocket costs. Approximately, 50% of breast cancer patients face financial hardship as a result of their diagnosis, including those with insurance.

Shades of Pink Foundation (SOPF) is a local 501(c)(3)charitable organization whose mission is to reduce financial stress for those undergoing breast cancer treatment in Southeast Michigan by providing prompt funding for daily living expenses. Since 2005, SOPF has assisted more than 1,200 individuals and their families in Southeast Michigan as they navigate the high costs of a breast cancer diagnosis. Founded on the principle that no person should have to forgo life-saving medical treatment due to financial need, we have distributed over $2.9 million. From mortgage payments to utility bills, insurance premiums to child care, SOPF has helped ease the financial burden for breast cancer patients in need. By paying bills directly, we give patients the peace of mind necessary to move forward with their treatment and recovery. None of this could have been possible without our community's generous contributions.

 SOPF has been investing in the local community for 20 years. Our Charity Navigator Encompass Rating is 100.
