Housing Support Specialist

Job Summary: The CHS Housing Support Specialist (HSS) is a part-time volunteer. The HSS supports the work of housing navigation, a component of the Coordinated Assessment Model’s intake process. The HSS’s primary responsibility is to assist with intake, assessment and navigation of individuals and families who are literally and/or chronically homeless under federal law, with acquiring the supporting documentation needed to be accepted by government funded providers.

Reporting Relationship: Reports to the Housing Navigation Manager.

Duties and Responsibilities:
• Understanding and practicing the Housing First model.
• Complete intakes and provide housing counseling and coordination to eligible clientele: virtually, in-person, or over the phone
• Attaining and maintaining a comprehensive understanding of federal law concerning the definitions of homeless, chronically homeless, at risk, and how these definitions apply to local, state and federal housing programs.
• Maintaining appropriate case documentation and ensuring that accurate assessment and reports are completed in accordance with program standards. Ensuring all documentation is entered into the Michigan State Homeless Management Information System Database (HMIS) system and Salesforce
• Attending team meetings to review of case plans, intervention techniques, program goals and other related issues.
• Participating in required initial and ongoing training.
• Adhering to funder/Volunteer partner’s program requirements
• Assuming other tasks commensurate with abilities and experience as assigned.

Qualifications and Requirements:


Some experience communicating and providing service to individuals and families that are in crisis.
Reasoning Ability: Creativity, ability to interpret and apply complex federal and local regulations, ability to negotiate outcomes.

Job specific training will be coordinated and/or provided by the Housing Program Manager.
