Volunteer Opportunity:

Virtual Literacy Mentor (Center For Success)

Brilliant Detroit and the Center for Success have partnered to offer virtual literacy tutoring for kids K-4. We are currently seeking volunteers for our school-year session which runs from October 4th to May 27th. Ideally, volunteers commit to tutoring for two sessions a week with the same student. Students attend the program on either M/W or T/Th. We offer a few different session times within the range of 3:50-6pm. Sessions last 30-45 minutes at the discretion of the tutor/student pair. In the interest of developing the tutor/student relationship, we try to have the same volunteer meet one-on-one with the same student each time.

The Center for Success has prepared resources for mentor-student pairs to use during the remote sessions. What a tutor/student pair works on each day is up to them. The focus of the program is to provide additional literacy support in a fun and engaging manner. Sessions can include, but are not limited to, reading books, having a debate, playing literacy games, writing and acting out stories, and more! To become a volunteer with the program, no experience is needed, but one must attend a 1.5 hour training session and pass a background check. We also ask that volunteers attend a Mentoring for Equity workshop which serves as an introduction to the ways that history, privilege, and bias can impact our roles as mentors.
