Virtual or In-person Literacy Tutor

Oakland Literacy Council seeks volunteers to serve as tutors for foreign-born and U.S.-born adult learners who live or work in Oakland County. Tutors help adult learners improve reading, writing, and communication skills, so they can read their mail, apply for jobs, and communicate with teachers, doctors, and others in the community.

Tutors work on a one-on-one basis with learners for two hours a week or a year (with time off for vacations and holidays). Currently, all tutoring occurs virtually. As Covid restrictions ease, tutors and students have the option to meet in person. In-person meetings occur in public locations such as a library.

Currently, our greatest need is for tutors to work with English language learners. These are adult immigrants who need help reading, writing, and speaking English. But we also serve U.S.-born adults whose education may have been disrupted.

The Council trains all volunteers and provides proven curriculum. No special background is required. This is a volunteer opportunity where you really see the positive change you have on another person's life!
