What We Do

ALS of Michigan provides support and services to people who have ALS (pALS), their family members and caregivers. Also known as Lou Gehrig's disease, ALS is one of the few diseases with no known cause, cure or treatment and is a debilitating and devastating condition that attacks the body's muscles, making it hard to move, speak, swallow, and eventually breathe.

Our mission is to help our pALS live as comfortably as possible as their disease progresses and their health declines. Services we provide include loans of adaptive equipment such as walkers, wheelchairs, ramps and eating utensils; in-home aides to give family members a break from 24-hour care; transportation assistance, speech therapy and equipment so individuals can continue communicating with their loved ones; support groups for pALS and their families; seminars on managing ALS and other needed support.

Interesting Info
  • The Midwest has the highest incident rates of ALS and in the last 10 years, its prevalance in Michigan has nearly doubled.
  • Exposure to pollutants and pesticides increase the risk of ALS and Veterans have double the incident rate of the disease.
  • Every 90 minutes some is diagnosed or passes away from ALS and the worldwide incident rate is predicted to increase 70% by the year 2040.
