What We Do

When a young woman becomes homeless, every moment she spends on the street increases her risk for exploitation and trafficking. Reaching her quickly is critical for her safety. Often, Alternatives For Girls is her only lifeline. We meet girls and women where they are. At Alternatives For Girls, they can access safe shelter, crisis support, and so much more. With this support, girls can stay out of harm’s way, succeed in school, graduate, and become leaders in their communities. Most importantly, they have a safe place to learn and grow.

As Alternatives For Girls works to help our young women and families move from homelessness to stability and economic independence, the lack of safe, affordable housing in the city has been a challenge. A unique partnership between AFG and a non-profit developer has resulted in an additional 45 units of much-needed affordable, supportive housing in Detroit with on-site supportive services provided by AFG.

*AFG is currently accepting in-kind donations to help our families moving into the Dr. Maya Angelou Village (DMAV)

DMAV is nearly ready to open and to move-in families in urgent need of stable, affordable housing.  We are asking our community to consider purchasing household items – items that every family needs when setting up a new home. We will take the items you purchase and create “Move-in Kits” for each family. Imagine those families walking into their new homes with essential household supplies to help them settle in!

Our wish list of items is below.

Thank you in advance for supporting our young families in this way!
