What We Do

The Black Artists Archive creates a safe, supportive, and dynamic space for people to make, exhibit, learn, and preserve Black art history & visual culture. Our vision is to transform human lives by presenting Black visual culture in ways that dismantle the conventional functions of the archive, the exhibition, and traditional art history.

To realize this vision, BAA is launching three core initiatives:

  1. The Black Artists Archive (BAA): This initiative will transform traditional archiving practices by focusing on the preservation of Black cultural materials, ensuring that the legacies of Detroit’s Black artists are safeguarded for future generations.
  2. The Black Curatorial Institute (BCI): As a new learning center, the BCI will advance innovative approaches to curatorial and archival practices, enriching the study and interpretation of Black art and visual culture.
  3. DUO Incubatory Residency: This residency will create and facilitate interdisciplinary dialogues between curators and artists, focusing on the unique experience of Black creatives in Detroit. By nurturing these collaborative efforts, we aim to elevate the careers of Black artists and curators.

We welcome input from metro Detroiters as it will help us create a new model for the arts community—one that truly honors and uplifts Black artists, their work, and their cultural impact. Together, we can ensure that the rich history and vibrant future of Black art are preserved and celebrated for generations to come.
