Founded over thirty years ago by a group of neighbors, Detroit Regional Dollars for Scholars (DRDFS) provides equitable opportunities for students to earn a post-secondary credential and reach their professional goals. We have grown to partner with 16 high schools across Macomb, Monroe, Oakland, Washtenaw, and Wayne counties. We empower students to attain educational opportunities beyond high school through scholarships, then prepare them to succeed in their educational journey after high school– their post-secondary journey– through comprehensive support.
At the heart of our mission lies a fundamental belief in the power of post-secondary education. It is more than simply a pathway to a degree or credential after high school; it is a catalyst for unlocking possibilities and building communities.
With so many schools participating, a robust academic support program was able to grow, starting in 10th grade and assisting students until they earn a college degree or credential. In 10th grade, students participate in a full schedule of trips and activities to get inspired to begin their post-secondary journeys. In 11th and 12th grade, students prepare for college as they tour campuses, talk with admissions staff, learn about majors, and receive acceptance letters. Through college, students practice networking and self-advocacy skills, such as communicating effectively with professors and managing busy courseloads, in order to succeed.
In order to better complement the DRDFS scholarship program, the academic support program earned its own name in 2019 and is now known as the Next Level Scholars™ program. With this program at the forefront, our Detroit chapter of Dollars for Scholars became the first chapter nationally to be awarded the Scholarship America Honors Award. DRDFS was proud to receive this great award next to the scholarship programs of Chick-fil-A and Coca-Cola.
Today, we serve nearly 400 students in Southeast Michigan annually. DRDFS has awarded scholarships exceeding $3 million to more than 1,700 students since 1990, and our alumni network grows each year. DRDFS is proud of the students and supporters who have helped us get to where we are today. After more than 30 years, we have accomplished a lot, but still have work to do. We are looking forward to many more years of partnering with those who share our passion of helping local students succeed.
