The Heat and Warmth Fund (THAW), is a leading provider of utility assistance for Michigan residents. Our mission is to empower and stabilize Michigan families, keeping them healthy, safe, and warm. Founded in 1985, THAW has distributed over 230 million dollars to help over 320,000 low-income families across the State of Michigan address their critical needs by providing emergency energy and water utility payment assistance and programs designed to meet the immediate and long-term needs of vulnerable households.
THAW’s current programming assists with electricity, natural gas, deliverable fuels (such as propane, wood, and cherry pits), water utility costs, energy efficiency and water conservation education; whole home energy assessments; and sustainability and energy efficiency services, including minor home repair designed to increase home energy efficiency and to reduce the water and energy burden.
- For the fiscal year July 2022 through June 2023, THAW paid over $6 million dollars in direct energy payments on behalf of over 7,000 households.
- • THAW serves all 83 counties in Michigan, and provides assistance for gas, electricity, water and deliverable fuels such as propane and wood.
- • Nearly 90 cents of every dollar donated to THAW goes to direct services and programs
