What We Do

The health community recognizes climate change as a health emergency, but also a health opportunity.  Editors from over 200 medical journals, including NEJM, emphasize the need to reduce emissions quickly, while at the same time recognizing that much of what we do to address the climate crisis is also good for our personal and collective health.

As such, Michigan Clinicians for Climate Action (MiCCA) is dedicated to utilizing the trusted healthcare voice to educate and advocate for meaningful climate legislation with a vision of "creating a climate in which the health and well being of ALL people can thrive"!

Michiganders are already experiencing adverse health impacts of our changing climate today, with populations living closest to heavy traffic, heavy industry, and fossil fuel pollution and extraction are suffering disproportionately.  By transitioning away from fossil fuels and electrifying our transportation and building sectors, those communities who have suffered the greatest impacts, are justly positioned to gain the greatest health co-benefits.

MiCCA has had the opportunity to educate the public and health professionals across the state, including those in training, about the health impacts of the climate crisis, as well as the potential health co-benefits of transitioning to a low carbon economy. We have also had the opportunity to educate Congress, encouraging a focus on climate, health, and equity in all policy-making.

Michigan Clinicians for Climate Action (MiCCA) believes that health care should play a leading role in addressing climate change as it accounts for 8.5% of U.S. greenhouse gas emissions. Over the past year, we have engaged over 130 health professionals across the state on the importance of decarbonizing healthcare and instituting climate smart policies. In 2023, we plan to expand this effort through a series of Grand Rounds, and empowering health advocates within many of Michigan's largest healthcare systems.

So, if you are a health professional concerned about climate change, or know someone who is, please join us in our efforts to educate and advocate about the health benefits of addressing climate change. Health is the human face of the climate crisis, and with your help, each of us will have an opportunity for a healthy and more equitable future.
