Elms Family and Community Services (EFCS) is recruiting for its Board of Directors Secretary. This is a volunteer (unpaid) secretarial role that serves as a member of the organization’s Board.
EFCS is a 501(c)(3) nonprofit organization, located in Macomb County, Michigan. We service youth, families, seniors and adults in Macomb/Wayne counties and Detroit Metro Area. We aim continuously to provide services, resources and support that will enable under-represented families, individuals and youth to overcome social, economic, educational and other barriers in which they face by gaining and sustaining successful outcomes in life. We do this through our support services, programs and community projects.
Summary of Role: The Board of Director Secretary provides administrative support to the organization's Board.
Duties and Responsibilities
- Types and maintains minutes of board meetings
- Responsible for providing notice to each director as required by law, the articles of incorporation, or the organization’s bylaws
- Custodian of corporate records
- Maintains record of the names and addresses of each officer and director
- Performs all duties incident to the office and other duties assigned by the President
- Attends all board meetings
- Maintains all board records and ensure their accuracy and safety
- Provides notice of meetings of the board and/or of a committee when such notice is required

- Capacity to take on additional tasks, serve and lead committees, participate in fundraising, actively participate in deliberations and providing wisdom to the board meeting discussions
- Ability to assess budgets and read financial statements with a critical eye
- Understands legal duties, including non-compliant actions, omissions and industry issues-Understands the importance of the organization’s social mission and viability; Understands cultural differences (i.e. values, behaviors, beliefs and basic assumptions)
- Understands what governance is all about-Is knowledgeable, aware and accepts other cultures
- Ability to provide diverse points of view to board deliberations
Education/Experience
Minimum of an Associate Degree in Business Administration or similar coursework or combined education and experience. A minimum of 1 year's experience serving in an administrative and/or business role.
Preferred experience working in human services, a nonprofit organization or a similar setting.
Time Commitment
The successful candidate must attend all Board meetings, every 1st Monday monthly and be available for approximately 5-10 hours monthly. First month in appointment and during the organization's budget development process for the period of July - October may require additional hours.
Position Term: This appointment is for the 2025-26 term, with an opportunity to renew for two 2-Year terms.
