Friends of ITNDetroit dba Independence Rides is a nonprofit public charity (IRS 501.c.3) focused on providing dignified transportation independence for seniors and vision impaired adults in the Detroit metropolitan area. As the COVID-19 pandemic passes, we are slowly returning to providing rides beyond medical appointments, pharmacy, and grocery shopping. These other rides will eventually include visits to hair dressers, barbershops, local parks and museums, and trips for personal banking.
The ideal applicant for this position desires to provide this much-needed service to seniors and vision impaired adults in Detroit area communities. This volunteer position includes a mileage reimbursement for those drivers who request it. Schedules are very flexible, allowing drivers to provide as few as two round-trip rides per month. Rides are now available for all seven days of the week, though most ride requests are currently Monday through Friday. This position reports to the Executive Director of Independence Rides.
Overall Role:
- Drive Independence Rides members (seniors age 60 and older, and visually impaired adults) to desired destinations within the greater Detroit area. Most drivers will provide these rides using their own vehicles, though a vehicle owned by this service is also available as needed. Independence Rides provides additional insurance to cover the vehicle and all occupants.
Essential Duties & Responsibilities:
- Providing safe, comfortable, and dignified transportation
- Be ready to provide walking assistance to-and-from the vehicle for any customer who desires it
- Keeping a positive attitude with your customers, interacting with them with sensitivity and patience
- Keeping your vehicle clean
- Maintaining confidentiality of Independence Rides customers, volunteers, and staff
- Being on time for all rides
- Wearing your Independence Rides ID
- Maintaining regular communication with the Rides Coordinator about all ride situations
- Abide by the standard organizational policies in the Independence Rides Driver’s Handbook
Required Qualifications:
- Must have a valid driver’s license and a minimum of 5 years driving experience
- Able to lift and stow a walker, and to carry packages such as grocery bags
- Personal references from two non-relatives
- Proof of liability insurance for your vehicle
- Current registration and inspection sticker on vehicle (if applicable)
- Must be fluent in English, including reading, writing, and speaking
- All applicants must submit to a driving and criminal background checks
Preferred Qualifications:
- Able to lift and stow a folding wheelchair
- Experience driving or working with seniors and/or people with disabilities
