MOSAIC Youth Theatre of Detroit

Mosaic empowers and supports young people to pursue excellence on stage and in life.

Through Mosaic’s Young Artist Scholars Program staff, near peers, and volunteers provide tools and support youth ensemble members need to increase their confidence and ability to be their best academically in school and during college admissions exams. Drop-in school work support/ tutoring is available to all youth ensemble members two nights a week at no cost to the young artists or their families, thanks to the impactful support of individuals and organizations that give of their time, talents, and financial donations. Mosaic Young Artists Scholars Volunteers help youth ensemble members achieve excellence in life by:

• Supporting young artists develop a sense of belonging Helping young artists with schoolwork;
• Offering individual or small group attention Showing interest in what Mosaic young artists are learning and experiencing in school;
• Helping young artists feel successful by giving positive feedback and support Being a part of their trusted near-peer and adult ally network Subjects:
  • Middle School English/Language Arts/Writing Math Science
  • High School: English/Language Arts/Writing Math (Algebra, Trigonometry, Geometry, Calculus) Science (Biology, Chemistry, Physics)
  • Time Commitment: Tutors are needed Tuesday and Thursday from 5:15-6:30 PM or Wednesdays from 4:30-5:30pm
  • We ask that you commit to one day per week from October-December and/or January-May as consistency is important for our young artist’s success.
  • Tutors must pass a background check to work with Mosaic young artists.

Volunteer Qualifications

• A passion for supporting youth to thrive;
• At least 18 years old and finished with high school (or equivalent);
• Experience in (or willingness to learn about) working with students of color and anti-racist educational practices;
• A desire to build healthy relationships and learning skills, and engage in mutual learning and collaboration;
• Consistency and reliability Enthusiasm for affirming students’ identities, strengths, and creativity.
