The Bottomless Toy Chest

Mickey Guisewite’s life was forever changed when her son was diagnosed with leukemia.  The typical day-to-day “worrys” she had as a mother of a teenager were quickly replaced with concerns and conversations regarding her son’s critical health.  When her son began treatment, they were in the hospital 24/7 for days and sometimes weeks at a time.   During that period, her family was lucky to have a strong support system to help with the extra challenges they faced.  Thankfully, Mickey’s son responded to treatment and was able to pick up where he left off as a healthy, active teenager

Mission Monday: Featuring Team Guts

Welcome to this week's Mission Monday!

For many, summer is a time when kids participate on teams and in sports camps that offer a chance for recreation and socializing. Just like neurotypical children, children with special needs also benefit from physical activities that builds strength and confidence. However, designed for individuals with special needs are often overlooked by sports and recreation departments and consequently, hard for many to access.

We are proud to introduce our SHARE Detroit community to Team GUTS, a valuable resource for children with special needs and families who seek structured physical activity for their children and the countless benefits associated with this activity.

WELCOME TO THIS WEEK'S MISSION MONDAY!

SHARE Detroit is happy to provide our community with the chance to learn more about Yad Ezra, an organization with a compelling mission. We are honored to have Yad Ezra on our platform. In Hebrew the words “Yad Ezra” means “helping hand” and since opening its doors in 1990, they have stayed true to their name and become a valued resource in the Jewish Community.

Yad Ezra began with a mission of providing supplemental kosher groceries to low-income Jewish families in the metro Detroit area. Their client families vary from unemployed and underemployed individuals to elderly people, single parents, new Americans and those in emergency situations.

Mission Monday: Featuring Kevin's Song

Welcome to this week's Mission Monday!

May was dedicated to Mental Health Awareness, we are proud to promote another wonderful organization that addresses this important topic.  Kevin’s Song is a newer member of our SHARE Detroit family and the impact of their work in the community is one that many are familiar with and have benefitted from.

Kevin's Song was founded in 2013 by Gail and John Urso following the death by suicide of their oldest son, Kevin.  After his death, John and Gail learned of the numerous local, state and national organizations working to prevent suicide and became familiar with resources for survivors of suicide and attempt survivors.  They reasoned that if they were not familiar with these resources until after they lost their son, there were likely many others in the same situation.

Featuring: Know Resolve!

Mental Health Awareness Month has been observed in the month of May since 1949.  This initiative has helped educate the public on the variety of mental illnesses that affect nearly 20% of Americans. Over the years, the intention of this month has grown to educate and break down the stigma associated with these types of illnesses and promote activities and habits that support our mental health.

At SHARE Detroit, we are proud to have nonprofit organizations that support mental health on our platform.    In recognition of this month, we are pleased to highlight Know Resolve, an organization with a compelling history, mission and powerful resource in our community.
