January is National Mentoring Month!
“A mentor is someone who allows you to see the hope inside yourself.” - Oprah Winfrey
January is National Mentoring Month! This is a time dedicated to highlight the importance of mentorship within our lives. A mentor is someone who provides their expertise in an area to a beginner in order to further that beginner’s development. And here’s a fun fact: the word mentor comes from The Odyssey wherein the character Mentor served as a guide to Odysseus's son Telemachus!
At SHARE Detroit, we are partnered with a variety of nonprofits that have mentoring programs including,
- Forward Youth
- The IMAGINE Mentoring Program
- Girlz N Tune Inc.
- Big Brothers Big Sisters of Metropolitan Detroit
- Destined For Greatness Mentoring & Community Resource Center
- TCB Youth Mentoring
- Winning Futures
- VIP Mentoring
All of these organizations share a common goal of supporting the lives, visions, and growth of young people, including populations who may be suffering from trauma or are otherwise underserved in their communities.
We hope that you will take the time to read more about and then support these organizations by attending an event, volunteering time, donating money, or shopping their wish-lists! If you are still in search of a nonprofit to support, please check out our directory here.
