Empowering Young Mothers: How SHARE Detroit Helps A Girl Like Me Inc. Thrive
A Girl Like Me is one of SHARE Detroit’s most active nonprofit partners. Over the years, we’ve talked with A Girl Like Me founder Tyra Moore to spotlight her organization’s individual work and the connections SHARE has helped her make with other nonprofits. In honor of our longstanding partnership, we spoke with Moore once again to discuss the continued impact partnering with SHARE has had on her work.
A Girl Like Me has helped over 2,500 teen and young mothers by providing education on parenthood and supplying necessary hygiene items such as diapers, wipes, and feminine products. They also operate their own resource hub to offer these services more efficiently. Moore founded A Girl Like Me in late 2019, inspired by her own experience as a young mother. Moore’s daughter Samari was born when she was 14 years old. Moore recalled the shock her family experienced during this time, with her mom learning she was pregnant the very week she gave birth. Despite the surprise, her family, friends, and community pitched in to support Moore after giving birth, a kindness Moore never forgot. She resolved to pay it forward.
The work of A Girl Like Me has been irreplaceable in the lives of the people they’ve helped. Moore told us about one client whose experience has stuck with her. This client was an immigrant mother of three who was expecting a fourth child and had just moved from Florida to Michigan. At a 2023 Thanksgiving event, the woman came up to Moore to tell her that when she moved to Michigan, her family had nothing, but someone shared information about A Girl Like Me in a resource group on Facebook, and when she went to an A Girl Like Me event, she was able to receive everything she needed including clothes, shoes, and baby items. The mother wanted to thank Moore personally for the impact Moore’s organization had on her family’s well-being.
This impact would not be impossible without others backing A Girl Like Me. Through Moore’s partnership with SHARE Detroit, not only has A Girl Like Me received donations, funding opportunities, and in-kind support directly because of SHARE, but Moore has also been able to develop new partnerships with other nonprofits and has made connections with corporate sponsors, notably during A Girl Like Me’s Christmas programing.
Beyond these connections to community members, other nonprofits, and corporate sponsors, Moore emphasized that SHARE Detroit’s assistance has extended into one very important area: emotional support. Moore said that SHARE has been instrumental in encouraging her during tough moments. She recalled, “I remember writing a letter [about A Girl Like Me’s struggles] and being so fearful of writing because I didn’t want to be judged and [thought of as though] I couldn’t handle running a nonprofit and the Executive Director [Janette Phillips] wrote me back as soon as possible to have a meeting and learn more of my needs and helped me make it through our rough patch and has stuck by our side ever since.”
Moore wants A Girl Like Me to expand their services and supply hubs nationwide, while also broadening her own reach as a motivational speaker beyond the United States. She sees SHARE Detroit as an important part of these plans because it is a place where people can see her impact and learn how to help, whether that be through attending events, volunteering, or entering into new partnerships.
When asked about what she would say to nonprofits considering partnering with SHARE Detroit, Moore expressed her gratitude towards SHARE and stated, “This would be your best move … because the team is amazing, the platform is amazing, [and] you will work with and meet people that genuinely care about you and your nonprofit growth. The team is always there and available to help you with all your questions and concerns and will lead you correctly when you feel you are falling short.”
We are proud to support A Girl Like Me and look forward to many more years of helping them DO GOOD!
