Happy Hannukah!
“Even in darkness it is possible to create light and encourage compassion. That it is possible to feel free inside a prison. That even in exile, friendship exists and can become an anchor. That one instant before dying, man is still immortal.” - Elie Wiesel
Hanukkah, the Festival of Lights, is a holiday celebrated for eight days and eight nights that involves, in part, lighting one candle nightly on a menorah to represent the eight days nights that the menorah kept aflame during the Rededication of the Second Temple during the Maccabean Revolt caused by the outlawing of Judaism by the Seleucid Empire in the second century BCE. Hanukkah is a smaller celebration for Jewish people elsewhere in the world, but due to its proximity to Christmas, it has become an important cultural celebration for American Jewish people during the December holiday season in the United States.
This Hanukkah, we here at SHARE Detroit wants to highlight a few of the nonprofits we are partnered with who operate in accordance with the Jewish faith: Orchards Children's Services, Gesher Services, Jewish Family Services of Washtenaw County, Yad Ezra, Mezuzah, and JARC. Yad Ezra works to support those in need within the Jewish community by providing a food pantry and offering financial assistance. JARC adheres to Jewish values as they provide care and support for adults with developmental disabilities.
We hope that you will take the time to read more about and support either or both of these organizations by attending an event, volunteering time, donating money, or shopping their wish-lists! If you are still in search of a nonprofit to support, please check out our directory here.
