How to Volunteer for the Environment in Metro Detroit
With its welcoming parks, beautiful nature preserves and conservancies, formidable and serene rivers, and long border on one of Michigan’s Great Lakes, the environment of Southeastern Michigan is one worth taking care of! At SHARE Detroit, we are partnered with many environmentally based nonprofits and our website can make it easier to find nearby organizations and opportunities to support!
When you access our nonprofit directory from our homepage by clicking “Find Nonprofits” or our navigation bar by clicking “Donate,” you can first narrow your results down by selecting “Environment” from both the “Who It Helps” and “What It Impacts” categories on the sidebar.
From here, there are a number of tags you can choose from on the “Causes” list including conservation and gardening to further narrow down the type of nonprofit you’re looking for. But if you’re happy to help any environmentally-based nonprofit and are more focused on proximity over mission, you can use the “Geographic Location” category to search for nonprofits by county.
If you want to search directly for events instead of nonprofits more broadly, you can do so by selecting “Attend Events” from our homepage and navigation bar. What’s nice about our events search page is that you can narrow your search even more from just the county level into the city level! You can once again select “Environment” from the “Who It Helps” list and check on events near you!
To search for volunteer opportunities, select “Volunteer” on our homepage or navigation bar. In addition to being able to select “Environment” from the “Who It Helps” and “What It Impacts” on the volunteer search sidebar, you can also search volunteer opportunities by desired skill set. A skill set you may want to apply when looking for opportunities to help the environment might be landscaping and gardening!
If you can’t find events or volunteer opportunities nearby or you’re not one to get out there directly (we don’t judge!), you may want to turn towards supporting nonprofits by shopping their wish lists, which you can do by clicking “Shop for Good” on our homepage and navigation bar. You can once again select “Environment” from the “Who It Helps” category to find the wish lists you’re looking for. When the wish lists show up, you can click the items there directly or can click “Shop Our Wish List” to see a nonprofit’s full wish list.
And that’s how you can use SHARE Detroit’s four pillars of giving to support the environment! Happy Giving!
