National Suicide Prevention Month
September 10th is World Suicide Prevention Day and September is National Suicide Prevention Month. Suicide is not a moral failing–it is the last effort of someone wanting to relieve themselves of pain. This means there are often reliable signs that someone may be considering suicide and there multiple opportunities to intervene. However, not everyone has access to the mental health resources they need or feels comfortable reaching out for help.
According to the National Institute of Mental Health, in 2020, suicide was the number 12 leading cause of death in the United States. According to the CDC, “Americans with higher than average rates of suicide are veterans, people who live in rural areas, and workers in certain industries and occupations like mining and construction. Young people who identify as lesbian, gay, or bisexual have higher rates of suicidal thoughts and behavior compared to their peers who identify as heterosexual.” These statistics show us that suicide affects all people.
The best ways to prevent suicide are not only to expand access to mental health care but also to ensure people have their basic survival needs met such as through increasing housing security and financial stability and giving people more opportunities to feel supported as part of a community. SHARE Detroit is partnered with several amazing nonprofit organizations that work on mental health outreach on many levels including,
