Random Acts of Kindness Day (February 17th)

As many of our SHARE Detroit readers may know, February 17th is Random Acts of Kindness Day. RaK Day was created by the RaK foundation as a way to promote small acts of generosity and respect that eventually create a ripple effect that leads to a better world. These acts could include allowing someone to go ahead of you in line at the grocery store, paying for the drink of the person behind you at a cafe, or holding the door open. The idea is that one kind act will encourage the others it affects to take their own kind actions and will also encourage both and subsequent actors to keep being kind.
While we want to encourage small acts of kindness everywhere, we want to remind our audience that giving needn't be random and sustained effort is necessary to effect change. We must not only strive for kindness, but also equity. Everybody needs kindness, but many people need material goods and access to services that will help them live a more dignified life.
