DETROIT – SHARE Detroit has partnered with Yanfeng to mobilize nearly 100 volunteers for Women’s Service Day (WSD) on Sept. 26, supporting nonprofits across metro Detroit. WSD connects likeminded women to foster community involvement and support local organizations.
Originally launched in West Michigan over 20 years ago, WSD found new roots in Novi, Michigan, after the relocation of three members of Yanfeng’s Women’s Resource Network. The initiative was recreated then with a group of around seven volunteers in 2021 and, through collaborative efforts, the event has flourished in metro Detroit.
“Women’s Service Day was such a highlight of our year that we couldn’t just leave it in Holland when we relocated,” said Priya Gurumurthy, director IT at Yanfeng International. “We’re so glad to continue the tradition here in our new community and are grateful to SHARE Detroit for helping us expand our reach and impact each year.”
In 2023, SHARE Detroit joined the initiative to further strengthen ties with nonprofits and enhance the program's impact. SHARE Detroit helped connect Yanfeng’s volunteers with local nonprofits in need of volunteers and spread the word about the volunteer opportunity to its network of those wanting to give back. In 2023, there were 28 volunteers and there are already 80 signed up this year, with a week left to register to participate at https://www.signupgenius.com/go/4090C4BA5AE2CA6FE3-50231489-womens#/.
“When people are looking for ways to give back in metro Detroit, we want them to come to us – and we’re so glad Yanfeng’s Women’s Resource Network did,” said Janette Phillips, executive director of SHARE Detroit. “These women were looking for places to volunteer and we knew which nonprofits in our network needed their help. These are the connections we love to make.”
From 9 a.m. to 4 p.m., participating women are volunteering at nonprofits, including The Walter White Community Resource Center, Starfish Family Services, Capuchin Services Center, Mint Artist Guild, Food Gatherers, Gleaners Community Food Bank, Mittens for Detroit, Siena Literacy Center, CARES of Farmington Hills, Center for Success Network, Michigan Council of Women in Technology and Fleece and Thank You. Volunteers will be doing a variety of tasks, including working with children, organizing donations, stocking shelves, yardwork and blanket making.
