Stories

Some call it stories. Others call it a blog. But here you will find nuggets of goodness to use and -- you guessed it -- SHARE!

Back to School

We’re midway through August which means teachers, children, and families are getting ready for another school year! Our partners here at SHARE Detroit are also gearing up to host back-to-school events and are putting out calls for community members to shop their wish lists to help them provide much needed school supplies to children in need. Providing students with classroom essentials first and foremost eases the financial strain of back-to-school shopping on families. Then, once children have what they need, they enter school with more confidence, leading to better engagement and information retention.

Partners with active calls for donations and upcoming events include–but are not limited to–Brilliant Detroit, Starfish Family Services, Clara’s Hope, D House of Angels, and Child’s Hope. We spoke to two of our partners to learn more about their specific needs and the impact donations have on their work.

Detroit Rescue Missions Ministries is providing backpacks to the 50-100 children in their homeless shelters and via community distribution in Detroit, Dearborn, and Wyandotte. DRMM is accepting backpack donations this year until August 30th! You can drop backpacks off to their office at 150 Stimson Street, Detroit Monday-Friday between 9 AM and 4 PM. In addition to donating backpacks directly in person, you can also shop DRMM’s wish list to buy back-to-school essentials and everyday items that benefit the 2500 men, women, and children that they house daily.

DRIVE R&E Family Foundation aims to prepare packages for 260 children this year for their Back 2 School program. You shopping DRIVE’s wish list will help them accomplish this task while allowing them to conserve funds for programs they run during the school year. On their wish list are pencils, rulers, folders, crayons–and more! They would especially love to receive notebooks and pencil boxes to help keep students organized and ready to learn. Other ways you can help DRIVE are by donating funds directly and volunteering for their events.

Your support makes the work of these organizations possible. Your decision to do good makes a difference in the lives of schoolchildren across our Metro Detroit community.
