International Universal Health Coverage Day
“Of all the forms of inequality, injustice in health is the most shocking and inhumane.” - Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr.
In 2012, the United Nations passed a resolution urging countries to institute for universal health coverage (UHC). December 12th commemorates this resolution which expands upon the ideals from the 1966 International Covenant on Economic, Social and Cultural Rights which affirms that health is a human right. The World Health Organization, too, proclaimed UHC to be a human right in their 1948 constitution.
The United States remains one of the few developed countries that does not guarantee UHC. Although the U.S. has a variety of programs that aid people in receiving healthcare including Medicaid and COBRA, the Center for Disease Control reports that upwards of 31.6 million people are uninsured. Therefore, today at SHARE, we want to highlight several nonprofit organizations that help low-income and uninsured people receive health care including The Wyandotte Clinic for the Working Uninsured, The Coddiewomple Fund, YesRx, and Trinity Community Care.
We hope that you will take the time to read more about and support some of these organizations by attending an event, volunteering time, donating money, or shopping their wish-lists! If you are still in search of a nonprofit to support, please check out our directory here.
