National Childhood Cancer Awareness Month
“Once you see the world through the cancer lens, you realize how many people are going through challenges and that you are never truly alone.” - Cynthia Hayes
September is National Childhood Cancer Awareness Month. According to the American Cancer Society, rates of childhood cancer have been rising slightly but due to medical advancements, the overall 5 year survival rate for children with cancer is 85%. While many childhood cancer patients have higher survival rates than adult patients, childhood cancer survivors are more likely to have more severe, long-lasting side effects.
SHARE Detroit is partnered with several nonprofits devoted to helping children afflicted with cancer and their families, including Camp Casey, Ryan Rocks Outdoor Adventures, The Bottomless Toy Chest, Kids Kicking Cancer, Kids Without Cancer, and Support the Cause.
Camp Casey, Ryan Rocks, and Kids Kicking Cancer all provide children with awesome opportunities to get active with horses, the outdoors, and martial arts, respectively. The Bottomless Toy Chest provides children with toys they can use to comfort themselves when bed bound. Kids Without Cancer was founded by parents to support research for treatments and cures. Support the Cause uses its platform to support other nonprofits engaged in cancer advocacy. All of these organizations provide a reason for hope!
We hope that you will take the time to support these organizations by attending an event, volunteering time, donating money, or shopping their wish-lists! If you are still in search of a nonprofit to support, please check out our directory here.
