Women's History Month 2025

"Women’s History Month is a celebration of the trailblazers who changed the world, and a reminder that our work is far from done."
— Cecilia Muñoz

March is Women’s History Month, a time dedicated to recognizing the contributions, achievements, and ongoing struggles of women throughout history. This celebration traces its origins to 1978, when it was first observed as Women’s History Week, an expansion of International Women’s Day, which had been recognized in the U.S. since 1909. The first International Women’s Day in the United States took place on February 28th, honoring the women who led the 1908 garment workers’ strike in New York. Across the world, early celebrations of women’s achievements were often tied to suffrage movements or peace protests during World War I.

While progress has been made in the fight for gender equality, the struggle continues. More than a century after the garment workers’ strike, women in industries across the globe—such as those in Bangladesh’s garment factories—are still advocating for fair wages and safe working conditions. Women’s History Month is not just about looking back at progress; it’s also about supporting the women who continue to push for change today.

At SHARE Detroit, we believe in taking action by uplifting organizations that empower women in our community. This month, we encourage you to support nonprofits making a difference in the lives of women and girls, including:

  • A Beautiful Me, Inc. – Providing educational programs that foster self-worth and confidence in young girls.
  • Loving Our Girls – Offering mentorship programs to uplift and support young women.
  • One Girl Revolution – Using social media to share the inspiring stories of everyday women who are changing the world.
  • Women of Banglatown – Creating a welcoming, culturally sensitive space for women and girls in the Banglatown neighborhood.
  • Hope Care and Beyond – Assisting immigrant and refugee women as they navigate and acclimate to their new communities.

There are many ways to show your support—whether by attending an event, volunteering, donating, or shopping from their wish lists. If you're looking for more organizations to support, check out our nonprofit directory at SHAREDetroit.org.
