World Theatre Day - March 27th
“All the world's a stage, / And all the men and women merely players.” - William Shakespeare, As You Like It
March 27th is World Theatre Day! Or as some of us in the states spell it, World Theater Day! However, you spell it, there’s no doubt theater has played an important role in human cultural development worldwide for thousands of years. Western theatre emerged in Ancient Greece as a way to honor the gods and the oldest surviving Greek play dates back to 472 BCE! Greek philosopher Aristotle would describe the purpose of theater as catharsis. The idea was simple: you would go to the theater, see actors perform intense scenarios, and then feel cleansed of your own emotions due to your response to the play. World Theatre Day was created in 1961 by the International Theatre Institute with the goal of promoting theatrical participation and enjoyment. In continuation of this mission, we here at SHARE Detroit want to highlight several of the nonprofits we are partnered with who make theater a priority. These include RTTM Community Center, St. Dunstan's Theatre Guild, Music Hall Center for the Performing Arts, MOSAIC Youth Theatre of Detroit, Detroit Opera, and The Detroit Creativity Project. We hope that you will take the time to support these organizations by attending an event, volunteering time, donating money, or shopping their wish-lists! If you are still in search of a nonprofit to support, please check out our directory here.
