International Day of Education (January 24th)
“Education is the passport to the future for tomorrow belongs to those who prepare for it today.” - Malcolm X
January 24th is the International Day of Education! We do not think we have to impress upon our SHARE Detroit readers how important education is–whether it be through grade school, college, work in a trade, or participation in a hobby. This date is a day to reflect upon our own experiences with education and think of people around the world or in our community who are still striving for access to education.
If you’re interested in supporting a nonprofit that deals in education, you are in luck because SHARE has many great partners that do just that! Some of these include Black Legacy Advancement Coalition, Each One Teach One, City Year Detroit, St. Vincent and Sarah Fisher Center, Mercy Education Project, The Austin Foundation, The Detroit Educational Takeover, Detroit Phoenix Center, Coleman A. Young Foundation, and Showers of Grace of Michigan, all of which work to provide access for students marginalized by race, class, gender, and/or ability.
We also have partners like The Michigan Youth Education Fund which helps students afford educational experiences outside of the classroom, Detroit Regional Dollars for Scholars which provides college scholarships, and Teacher's Pet which runs programs wherein dogs and children learn together.
We hope that you will take the time to support these organizations by attending an event, volunteering time, donating money, or shopping their wish-lists! If you are still in search of a nonprofit to support, please check out our directory here.
