World Homeless Day (October 10th) and International Day for the Eradication of Poverty (October 17th)
“It takes a society to combat homelessness, and a strong nation to fight poverty.” – Wayne Chirisa
October 10th is World Homeless Day and October 17th is the International Day for the Eradication of Poverty. World Homeless Day is a day that arose from online movements seeking to raise awareness surrounding homelessness. It is also a day intended to encourage action on the part of community members to support and advocate for the unhoused members of their community. The International Day for the Eradication of Poverty was first recognized by the United Nations in 1987 for the same purposes: awareness and advocacy. Homelessness and poverty are not new issues, of course, but according to the UN, the COVID-19 pandemic has pushed between 143 and 163 million people worldwide into poverty. In the U.S., it is estimated that there are half a million homeless people and unfortunately, this number has been increasing since 2016. Many advocates have switched their language choices from “homeless” to “unhoused” to emphasize the structural issues behind poverty, such as unequal access to housing, education, and healthcare.
In commemoration of these two days and to fulfill our mission as a space where people can find new ways to do good, we here at SHARE want to highlight a wide variety of nonprofits that work with unhoused people and/or provide aid for people who are financially unstable.
The following nonprofits provide shelter, housing, and essentials for individuals and families experiencing homelessness:
