Stories

Some call it stories. Others call it a blog. But here you will find nuggets of goodness to use and -- you guessed it -- SHARE!

January is National Mentoring Month!

“A mentor is someone who allows you to see the hope inside yourself.” - Oprah Winfrey

January is National Mentoring Month! This is a time dedicated to highlight the importance of mentorship within our lives. A mentor is someone who provides their expertise in an area to a beginner in order to further that beginner’s development. And here’s a fun fact: the word mentor comes from The Odyssey wherein the character Mentor served as a guide to Odysseus's son Telemachus!

#GivingTuesdayDetroit Nonprofit Winners

While any Tuesday can be a #GivingTuesday, this past November 29th was the official celebration of Giving Tuesday, a day that encourages people to do good. We here at SHARE held a local competition to spread the word about Giving Tuesday in Detroit. Winners of the competition each received $1,000 to continue their important work.

Winter is Coming!

My friend Kimber Bishop-Yanke continues to walk her talk to help our neighbors in need. Using a foreboding headline from Game of Thrones alerts all giving individuals that the need and daunting situations that many adults and families are facing are unceasing. Kimber and her angels are helping those in serious conditions but the calls continue to come in from multiple contacts around Oakland County, Michigan.

Farmworker Appreciation Day

“I have met many, many farmworkers and friends who love justice and who are willing to sacrifice for what is right. They have a quality about them that reminds me of the beatitudes. They are living examples that Jesus’ promise is true: they have been hungry and thirsty for righteousness and they have been satisfied. They are determined, patient people who believe in life and who give strength to others.” - Cesar Chavez

Nonprofit Spotlight: A Girl Like Me

Sunday morning I had the opportunity to meet a special individual that survived a harsh ‘lifequake’ moment when she was a teenager. Life often throws many unexpected realities at us and often tests our spirit and perseverance to make life purposeful. Tyra Moore was a teenage mom at 15. She was terrified to tell her mom and gave birth to her daughter the same week she finally broke the news. After the shock wore off, support came from all of her family, friends, and community, providing essential baby needs at a critical time.
